Gåsören island (about 250x500m) is located outside Skelleftehamn, 1½ km east of Bolidens smelter at Rönnskär. Pos N 64º39,8’, O 21º19’. Buildings on Gåsören today are; the old lighthouse with its small tower on the roof, the old pilot house, the present light-tower, a harbour with stone piers, three private owned summer houses, some out-buildings, boathouses and a cellar. In 1881, when Gåsören first was lit, the situation was as follows on the Swedish coast north of Sea of Bothnia: Known lighthouses northwards; (Pite-Rönnskär (lit 1880), Ledskär (1879), Rödkallen (1872) and Malören (1851). Southwards; Bjuröklubb (1859), Ratan, southern approach (1874), Bredskär (1877), Holmögadd (1760/1838) and lightship Sydostbrotten (1862). This year Skellefteå got its customs bonded warehouse for import of all kinds of goods and bond for goods in transit. Before that there was only permission to import coffee and sugar to Ursviken. The Gåsören lighthouse was ready built in 1881 and its kerosene fired light was lit 13 August this year. The lighthouse was, until the new light-tower was taken into duty, equipped
with a kerosene fired lens equipment of the 4th size (about 0.5 m diameter).
Height of the light, from sea level, was 10 meters. The light was white,
with three different characters: Single occulting, fixed light (leading
sector) and double occulting. Light range was 11,5 nautical miles.
In 1904 a house for pilots was raised. Pilots from Ursviken pilot station were then moved to Gåsören. The pilot house was originally built already in 1831 in Jämtösund, 1856 moved to Flakaskär, Råneå, and now to Gåsören. Sometime between 1912 and 1918 a telephone cable was connected to Gåsören. In 1921 the new light tower, in concrete, was ready and on 25 September its acetylene-fired AGA/Dalén light was lit and replaced the exacting kerosene light. The last light house keeper was moved to Holmögadd light house and maintenace of Gåsören light was taken over by a pilot. Light character of the new light was 2 flashes every 6:th second, with white, red and green sectors. Light range 13 nautical miles. The tower is white with a red belt. Today character is LFl(2) WRG 12s. Gåsören was without harbour until 1930, when the now existing piers were built. When electricity was connected to the island in 1932, change to electricity was also done for the light-tower. In 1945 the light was completely automatized. In 1967 Gåsörens 63 year old history as pilot station was ended when a new pilot station, Näsudden, was established on the mainland. Bjuröklubb pilot station was withdrawn the year before. Since the pilots had left Gåsören the houses were taken over
by military in 1972. In 1985 the Swedish Cruising Assosiation (Svenska
Kryssarklubbens (SXK), Skellefteå district) started leasing the old
lighthouse and began a careful renovation.
In the lantern of the old lighthouse is now, as curiosity, the light
equipment from light Ursviken Övre placed. It was lit 1901, electrified
1931 and shut down around 1992.
